Orange County Develops Ads Aimed at College Students
The American Lung Association of Orange County produced anti-smoking ads created by students for students through its Anti-Tobacco Media Campaign Project. Working with the communications department at California State University, Fullerton, the association directed the creation of several anti- smoking ads based on information taken from focus groups of college-age smokers.
After the selected ad ran in the school newspaper, a survey of students found that they understood the message and felt it was correctly targeted toward them.
Points of Light Foundation Honors San Francisco Volunteer
The Points of Light Foundation recently honored Foy Blackburn, 81, a volunteer for the American Lung Association of San Francisco &San Mateo Counties.
Blackburn, who has chronic bronchitis, was one of 25 honorees selected from 500 nominees. He hosts the American Lung Association of San Francisco & San Mateo’s corporate and community health fairs and oversees the mailing of its health newsletter to people with lung disease. He also helps with fundraising events such as Bike for Breath, which this year was the most successful ever, netting more than $30,000 and recruiting 900 registrants.
Redwood Empire Branch Hosts Showcase of Clean Air Vehicles
The American Lung Association of California, Redwood Empire Branch, hosted the largest showcase of clean air vehicles ever held in the North Bay as part of the American Lung Association’s nationwide Clean Air Month on May 1 in Santa Rosa.
On display were a fuel-cell car that runs on hydrogen fuel, electric vehicles, heavy-duty garbage trucks and school buses powered by natural gas, hybrid electric/gasoline vehicles, electric conversion cars, and many more. Visitors were able to take test rides.
Congresswoman Lynn Woolsey presented a Congressional Citation to the local association for hosting the event.
East Bay Campers Learn About Asthma
This summer, asthma camps offered by the American Lung Association of the East Bay provided 85 youth the opportunity to learn how to manage their asthma while having fun in a camp setting. Sixty-nine children, ages 9 to 13, attended the 12th residential Champ Camp in Lake Tahoe.
Roberts Regional Park in Oakland was the site for day camp for 25 children, ages 5 to 8. The Oakland Fire Department sent five firefighters as volunteer camp counselors to assist in activities including kung fu lessons, swimming, sports, arts and crafts, nature hikes, bird watching, music workshops and field trips.
Los Angeles Hosts ‘Scene Smoking’
"Scene Smoking:Cigarettes, Cinema, and the Myth of the Cool, " a documentary about tobacco depiction in the movies premiered at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art in April. The movie, directed by Terry Moloney and produced by Deirdre Imershein and Terry Moloney, features interviews with Sean Penn, Ted Danson, Christy Turlington and others, and is a part of the STARS project, funded by Proposition 99.
Santa Clara-San Benito Volunteers, Staff Make a Difference
Congratulations to Dr. Sulochina Lula, MD, of the American Lung Association of Santa Clara-San Benito Counties Board and Executive Director Margo Leathers Sidener for their abstract on the agency’s asthma screening study, which was accepted for a poster presentation at the Third Triennial World Asthma meeting in Chicago
Vice President Elect Terry Trumbull was recently appointed to the Bay Area Air Quality Management District (BAAQMD)Advisory Board, and association Board members Thomas Daily, MD, and Dennis English were appointed to the BAAQMD hearing board as representatives of the medical profession and the public sector respectively.
Lung Express Aimed at Kids in San Diego and Imperial Counties
The American Lung Association of San Diego and Imperial Counties unveiled a unique project in July to help kids find the fun in lungs. A 40-foot bus converted into a traveling exhibition space and teaching tool, the Lung Express is unique in the nation for the way it has incorporated state-of-the-art interactive lung health educational exhibits into a mobile vehicle. Powered by natural gas, the Lung Express is a low- pollution vehicle that will travel to schools and community events throughout San Diego and Imperial Counties.
