Sacramento’s Asthma Book is a Hot Seller at Hospitals
The Asthma Collaborative of the American Lung Association of Sacramento-Emigrant Trails recently published "Your Asthma Book" and "Asthma Self-Care Plan" wallet card. The 30- member, all volunteer collaborative represents healthcare providers, doctors, respiratory therapists, educators and parents.
The asthma book and wallet card are given to people with asthma so they can better monitor their care and learn more about their asthma.
San Francisco Awarded Grant for Tobacco Control Advocacy
The American Lung Association of San Francisco & San Mateo Counties was awarded a $200,000 contract from the San Francisco Department of Public Health, Tobacco-Free Project, to work with multi-unit residential housing complexes on tobacco control policies.
This work could lead to ground-breaking regulations that limit smoking in common areas of housing units, establish smoke-free units in sections of housing complexes and other policies to reduce the effects of secondhand smoke exposure.
Santa Barbara and Ventura Hosts Showcase of Clean Air Vehicles
The American Lung Association of Santa Barbara and Ventura Counties hosted the largest showcase of clean air vehicles ever held in the area. Designed to raise awareness of air pollution and health, the event featured the latest and greenest vehicle technology on the road today.
Among the vehicles on display were heavy-duty garbage trucks, sport utility vehicles and buses that run on natural gas, hybrid electric/gasoline vehicles and electric cars. State Assembly Member Hannah-Beth Jackson was the keynote speaker.
Central Coast Improves Asthma Outcomes
Thanks to a grant from the California Children and Families Commission, the American Lung Association of the Central Coast is helping families through its Early Childhood Asthma Initiative. Ninety-five families with children under the age of five enrolled for comprehensive asthma education, indoor air quality management, and healthcare integration.
Preliminary program data has indicated great success in improving the asthma outcomes and quality of life for the children and families involved.
Los Angeles Partners with Healthcare Provider
"Little Lungs," an innovative partnership pairing the American Lung Association's Sesame Street A is For Asthma program with a clinic healthcare provider, has developed instruments for physicians to use with their asthma patients to ensure that all providers follow the National Heart Lung and Blood Institute's National Guidelines for the Diagnosis and Management of Asthma.
Santa Clara-San Benito Blows the Whistle on Asthma
The American Lung Association of Santa Clara- San Benito Counties will be launching it's first ever "Blow the Whistle on Asthma" Walk on September 28 at West Valley College in Saratoga. The proceeds from Blow the Whistle on Asthma will go toward asthma programs in Santa Clara and San Benito counties.
East Bay Launches Oakland Kicks Asthma Thanks to CDC Grant
The American Lung Association of the East Bay held a news conference in December to formally announce the receipt of a Centers for Disease Control and Prevention grant for $500,000 to fight asthma.
The goal of the program is to increase the quality of life for students with asthma and decrease school absences by developing an asthma curriculum for and with middle and high school students.
Redwood Empire Supports Tough Woodsmoke Ordinance
Despite strong objections from the real estate industry, the city of Santa Rosa is poised to adopt the strictest regulation governing wood-burning appliances in the Bay Area. Working with local volunteers, the American Lung Association of California —Redwood Empire Branch helped bring the issue to the city council, and participated on a city-appointed task force.
Orange County Program Awarded Best Practice Status
The American Lung Association of Orange County's Preschool Asthma Outreach was named a Best Practice program by the nationwide American Lung Association.
Preschool Asthma Outreach teaches children, parents and daycare providers how to recognize and manage asthma to reduce symptoms and attacks.
