Asthma and Lung Disease Research Fund Would Expand Research

Lung Health News, Spring / Summer 2002

Lung disease is a major cause of death in California and more research is needed to find better treatments, and maybe even a cure, for diseases like asthma and emphysema.

The American Lung Association of California is sponsoring Assembly Bill 2127 (Matthews, D-Tracy)to re-establish the Asthma and Lung Disease Research Fund on the California state income tax form. If approved, taxpayers can donate to the fund by checking off a box on their tax forms.

In 2000, the association sponsored successful legislation that created this fund and it appeared on the 2000 state income tax form. However, because the fund raised $188,000 of the required $250,000 minimum, it was removed from the tax form. This bill would re-establish the fund and allow it to be on state income tax forms for five years if the $250,000 minimum is met.
