New Controls Required to Reduce Tiny Particles in the Air

Lung Health News, Fall 2003 / Winter 2004

State and local air districts must make progress toward meeting air quality standards for particulate matter air pollution - those tiny particles in the air that can be inhaled deep into the lungs and cause asthma attacks and other lung problems. Currently, the vast majority of California does not comply with the latest stringent standards set for particulate matter. Senate Bill 656 (Sher, D-Palo Alto), sponsored by the American Lung Association of California, requires the California Air Resources Board and local air districts to adopt feasible and cost-effective control measures to reduce particulate matter air pollution from the following sources: diesel engines, stationary combustion sources, wood stoves and fireplaces, agricultural burning, and construction and grading operations.
