Lung Health News, Spring/Summer 2006
Some “air purifiers” that are supposed to clean the air can emit unhealthful levels of ozone, a harmful air pollutant and lung irritant. In fact, some ozone-generating air cleaners emit ozone levels two to three times California’s air quality standard for ozone. That’s why the American Lung Association of California is sponsoring legislation (AB 2276, Pavley, D-Agoura) that would authorize the California Air Resources Board to adopt regulations to reduce ozone emissions from indoor air cleaning devices.
The association is advocating for new rules that would include a ban on the sale of higher emitting products, public disclosure of ozone levels emitted from air purifiers, and public outreach to raise awareness about the health effects associated with indoor ozone exposure.
