Lung Health News, Spring/Summer 2006
As the state considers several bond proposals that would expand California’s transportation infrastructure, the American Lung Association of California is joining with other health and environmental groups to advocate for provisions that would support the state’s efforts to reduce air pollution and greenhouse gas emissions.
The association is pushing for bond proposals to include funding for air quality projects, including cleaner school buses, trucks and locomotives as well as mass transit. Funding is also needed to upgrade ports, which generate high levels of toxic pollution. Smart growth principals should be incorporated in all new transportation expenditures to reverse California’s past failure to tie transportation to good land use policies and reduce vehicle trips.
