Kickin’ Asthma

Kickin’ Asthma addresses the unique needs of kids ages 11 to 16 with asthma who are too old for our Open Airways for Schools program but not yet adults. It empowers teens and preteens to take more control of their asthma so they can move into adulthood with the skills they need to manage their symptoms and live well.

The program is specially geared toward teens living in low-income neighborhoods who face social and economic challenges. These teens often have higher rates of asthma and are more likely to end up in the emergency room.

Kickin’ Asthma focuses on two main concepts:

•    Taking responsibility for managing the disease
•    Early action to prevent serious asthma episodes

Kickin’ Asthma is taught in four 45-minute sessions during lunch, PE, homeroom, or as a class pullout.

Kickin’ Asthma is taught by a volunteer facilitator. They can be school personnel, parents, community volunteers or anyone interested in helping teens learn how to take better control of their asthma so they can become healthy adults. Asthma is a serious chronic lung disease that can be life-altering and even life-threatening if not properly managed.
